A fault code is a clue—not always the answer

A scan tool can retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and live information, but a code does not automatically identify the failed part. Good diagnosis combines vehicle data with symptom history, visual checks and suitable electrical or mechanical tests.

Common reasons drivers call

• Check-engine or other warning lights
• Engine cranks but will not start
• Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power
• Battery repeatedly going flat
• Intermittent electrical faults
• Unusual fuel use or running behaviour

What to note before the visit

Record when the issue occurs, whether the engine is hot or cold, recent repairs, unusual sounds or smells and any warning messages. Do not clear fault codes before diagnosis unless required for safety.

When not to keep driving

Stop safely and seek advice if there is an oil-pressure warning, overheating, a severe brake concern, heavy smoke, strong fuel smell or major loss of power. Continuing can increase damage or create a safety risk.
